Transcript National Organization for Women OURSELVES, GROWING OLDER BAY AREA CHAPTER NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR WOMEN October, 1990 Doctor Program: Public Policies Relating to Ageism Presenter: Professor Anna Madison, Department of Public Affairs Texas Southern University Date: Time: Place: Contacts: October 4, 1990 7:30 p.m. A Uniting Church El Camino Real and Reseda Rusty Richards Dorothy Howard Phyllis Tucker 488-5546 486-0752 944.0033 "Ageism - the belief that a person's worth and abilities are determined solely by chronological age - is the enemy that threatens the creative, growing future we envision for ourselves. Research shows that intellectual capacity remains stable throughout life - the ability to learn new things continues unabated and, when actively exercised, enhances our well-being. Yet ageism declares us obsolete at a socially defined deadline. At age sixty we find ourselves on our community's senior-citizen list, and at sixty-five many companies expect us to retire even though mandatory retirement has been abolished by federal law."
