Veteran sportswriters were quoted as saying this was the most exciting finish of any golf tournament in history. The Cougars had a one stroke lead over the Longhorns coming to the final hole. Chip Stewart of the University of Texas hit a great second shot about 22 feet from the pin on the par five hole. His partner Rik Massengale of the Longhorns also hit a great second shot which came to rest about 30 feet from the pin about two feet off the green. Bruce Ashworth of UH was just under a 100 feet from the pin in the right rough in two and his partner Bob Barbarossa had caught the trap on the left leaving him about 50 feet from the pin. Ashworth flipped the ball up real high just clearing the trap by about 2 feet and the ball rolled up about 2V2 feet from the pin. It was one of those unbelievable shots. His partner Barbarossa then blasted from the trap and his ball ended up inside of Bruce about 15 inches from the pin. Lightning had struck twice . . . another unbelievable shot under the most possible pressure. Both Cougars knew they had to get birdie for the team to win. All four players made birdie. The pictures here tell the story of how Ashworth and Barbarossa of UH made their birdies, making it possible for UH to win the All America for the 13th time in 15 years.
