The 1970 graduate of Northern Colorado University (Greeley), with a degree in Physical Education and Psychology (plus a masters in PE earned at George Wililams 1973), is also an assistant coach for the United States' women's Olympic volleyball team. Nelson earned that spot in January 1977. Two of her former UH stars, Flo Hyman and Rita Crockett, are members of the Olympic squad. Nelson has been appointed recently as a member of the AlAW's National Volleyball Committee. She has been player-coach of the United States Volleyball Association (USVBA) team, Houston Stars, the last four years with the team tying for fifth in the AAU nationals in Chicago this last summer. The Stars were 15th at the USVBA Nationals in Dayton, and third at the AAU Junior Olympics in Chicago, also this last summer. She was a USVBA second team All-America in 1978. Nelson coached the United States Collegiate Sports Council women's team to a fifth-place finish in the World University games, plus the South squad to a gold medal finish—and the Midwest squad to a third-place spot at the U.S. Sports Festival in Colorado Springs, all this last summer. Nelson is known as one of the best setters in volleyball, as attested to the teams she has played for. She was a member of the 1972 U.S. National team that toured Mexico with the Mexican and Chinese teams. Before taking up volleyball Nelson was the No. 1 varsity tennis player for Northern Colorado in her freshman through junior seasons, a starting leftwinger for the field hockey squad two seasons, a starter on the basketball team for two seasons and a starter in centerfield in softball her sophomore season. Because of shoulder problems she took up volleyball, and spent her senior season playing for the USVBA Denver Firebugs.
