Transcript COUGAR NOTES WINNING WAYS Houston has a streak of five winning seasons it will take into the 1981 campaign. Head Coach Bill Yeoman has experienced only four losing seasons in his 19 at UH— the Cougars have had only nine seasons in their 35 years of intercollegiate competition. But, for only the third time in the last 13 seasons the Cougars failed to crack the the wire services' Top 20. UH had been ranked among the Top 10 three of the last four seasons going into 1980. TEAM MARKS Houston scored 236 points in 1980, the fifth straight season the Cougars have topped the 200 mark—the 14th time out of the last 15 seasons. The Cougars also had 214 first downs, marking the 12th time out of the last 14 seasons the 200-mark has been topped. UH had 3,784 total offensive yards—the 15th straight season over 3,000. The Cougars picked up 2,426 yards rushing, which is the lowest total since 1975 when they had 2,084. The 18 first downs UH picked up by penalty is a new all-time high, break the mark of 16 shared by the 1970, 1978 and 1979 teams. Opponents picked up 20 first downs after UH penalties, which is also a new high—breaking the mark of 19 shared by the 1966, 1975 and 1978 opponents. 1980 UH opponents were whistled for 84 penalties, breaking the mark of 78 set in 1978. LONELL PHEA Senior split end Lonell Phea of Bonham, who finished No. 3 in the nation in punt returns, is making his mark in the UH record book. Phea caught 29 passes for 533 yards and two TDs, this last season—which ties him for ninth with Bob Borah (1958) and Willis Adams (1978) for number of passes caught in a UH season. Phea has 41 receptions for 794 yards for his career to date. Only nine receivers have had more yardage—only four receivers in UH history have a better average per catch (Warren McVea 22.7, Elmo Wright 21.9, Vic Hampel 21.5 and Ken Hebert 19.8). Phea is averaging 19.4 per reception. He also has impressive overall total when you combine pass reception yards with punt returns, kickoff returns and rushing totals. Phea has 1,496 total yards and is averaging 15 yards every time he latches onto the football. 1980 HONORS Several Cougars earned honors in 1980, here is a complete rundown: ALL-AMERICA FIRST TEAM Leonard Mitchell (AP, UPI, NEA, Walter Camp, Kodak, The Sporting News) — DT Hosea Taylor (Walter Camp, FWAA) NG ALL-AMERICA SECOND TEAM Hosea Taylor (Football News, NEA—honorable mention AP) ALL-SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM BOWLS Leonard Mitchell (UPI, AP) Terald Clark, RB (Japan Bowl) Hosea Taylor (Senior, Hula bowls) ALL-SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE SECOND TEAM Leonard Mitchell (Senior Bowl) Lonell Phea, SE (AP, UPI) Randy Swisher, C (AP) Jack Faniel, G (AP, UPI) Hosea Taylor (AP) Steve Bradham, LB (AP, UPI) Weekly honors included: Sophomore quarterback Audrey McMillian vs SMU (ABC-TV) Linebacker Steve Bradham vs SMU, Texas Tech (AP) Linebacker Steve Bradham vs Rice (ABC-TV) (MORE/OVER)
