Transcript position breakdown 3-3-3-3 DEFENSIVE LINE 2 Lettermen 1 Redshirt 0 JC Transfers 6 Squadmen 1 Transfer Twin towers of destruction Hosea Taylor (NG) and Leonard Mitchell (LT) are gone, but this isn't a position to feel sorry for the Cougars. Terry Monroe, who earned a starting spot against Texas A&M, and got better and better after that is back at right tackle. UCLA transfer Raymond Robinson will step in for Taylor at nose guard. DeWayne Calloway and Alonzo Moore will battle for the left tackle spot, while Craig McGallion, Billy Termin and John Franklin will fight for playing time at nose guard. Sophomore Earl Jones is Monroe's replacement. Monroe was in on 42 tackles last season including four sacks. He also knocked down three passes and recovered one fumble. LINEBACKERS 2 Lettermen 2 Redshirts 1 JC Transfer 4 Squadmen This is one of the most talented areas on the squad. Two-year starter Grady Turner is back at left linebacker. He was the Cougars' second leading tackier last season with 111, 72 unassisted. He also recovered two fumbles, intercepted two passes and deflected three passes. Breathing down his neck for playing time is 6-2, 216 sophomore redshirt Eugene Lockhart. Junior Weedy Harris is the top candidate for the right linebacker spot, which was manned by Steve Bradham last season. Redshirt Kenneth Peters, JC transfer Paul Carlin and sophomore Ronald Hall will all battle Harris for playing time. Harris was in on 38 tackles and blocked one pass last season—he also had two quarterback sacks. DEFENSIVE ENDS 4 Lettermen 0 Redshirts 0 JC Transfers 1 Squadman Plenty of experience and talent here. Starters Kelly McDonald (left side) and Alvin Ruben (right side) return, plus their backups— Greg Harmon (left) and Leo Truss (right). McDonald was the Coogs' fifth leading tackier with 57. Ruben had 45. Both showed steady improvement last season, and with Harmon and Truss should give UH plenty of protection on the flanks. Look for sophomore James Holmes to see some playing time. DEFENSIVE BACKS Plenty of depth, talent and experience after last season's group responded well to first year as regulars. Only loss through graduation was at strong safety. Donnie Love and Butch LaCroix will man left cornerback. Calvin Eason and Tony Bryant have free safety, while Reggie Vonner and Darryl Ward are at right cornerback. James Durham, who saw starting time at right or left cornerback, will definitely see playing time. Lawrence Woods and James Brown are the top candidates to replace Larry Curry at strong safety. Vonner led the team in interceptions with four, while Eason had three. Love had two, while LaCroix had one.
