Transcript position breakdown 2-2-2-2 WIDE RECEIVERS/FLANKERS 2 Lettermen 0 Redshirts 0 JC Transfers 3 Squadmen Mr. Versatile, Lonell Phea, is back to harass opposing defenses. Phea averaged 18.4 yards on 29 receptions last season. He was also the third leading punt returner in the nation (13.7 average on 17 returns). He had six receptions for 132 yards and one TD against Miami-Florida, plus six receptions for 135 yards against Baylor last season. Backing up Phea at split end is capable junior Milton Watson. Though Watson doesn't possess Phea's speed, he runs accurate routes and catches nearly everything thrown his way. Watson averaged 16.5 yards a reception last season. Replacing fourth all-time leading receiver Eric Herring (tied with Riley Odoms) at flanker is another story. Three-year squadman Leon Felder, plus walk-on Willie Lawson are the top two candidates going into spring ball. TIGHT END 1 Letterman 0 Redshirts 0 JC Transfers 3 Squadmen Hubert Miller may have started every game last season, but Mark Ford ended up with approximately equal playing time since Head Coach Bill Yeoman used the tight ends as messengers. I Ford was the Cougars' third leading receiver last season with 13 receptions for 145 yards and one TD. Ford's best game was against Texas when he hauled in four passes for 49 yards. He is also the team's punter. Squadmen Robert Love, Doug Jackson and Olen Green will fight I) for the second team spot. KICKERS I I I I I I I I I 0 Lettermen 0 Redshirts 0 JC Transfers 1 Squadman Junior bare-footed soccer-style kicker Jeff Shaffer is the only placekicker returning. Shaffer handled kickoffs for most of last season, usually with boots that were inside the five or end zone. He did handle the PAT chores in the Garden State Bowl, hitting three of four in below freezing weather. Mark Ford has handled the punting chores the last two seasons and will be out to improve on his dismal 36.5 average last season after topping 40 his sophomore season. (MORE)
