Transcript POSITION BREAKDOWN OFFENSIVE LINEMEN 2 Lettermen 4 Redshirts 1 JC Transfer 9 Squadmen The good news is 6-4^, 280-pound junior Maceo Fifer is back at right tackle, while Bobby Grimes—a starter at right guard last season—returns to man left or right guard. After that, line coach Billy Willingham has his work cut out. Top contenders for the vacated center spot include redshirts Billy Kidd and David Roland, Redshirt Scott Marshall, plus returning squadmen Brian Wilkinson, Jack Sharp and Alvin Burns will fight for the guard vacancy. W.C. Ranson, Ray Rogers, redshirt Duane Losack, Bryan Teykl and Dan Greenawalt will be after the open spot at left tackle. Junior college transfer Bo Linden (6-5, 280 and son of former UH star Errol Linden) could see action at either guard or tackle. QUARTERBACKS 2 Lettermen 0 Redshirts 0 JC Transfers 1 Squadman 1 Transfer Brent Chinn was supposed to watch Terry Elston last season, instead the junior from Edna played in every game and started four. Chinn rushed for 453 yards and is the top returning UH rusher as he finished second in this department to Terald Clark last season. The cat-quick Chinn also passed for 749 yards and two touchdowns. But the job won't be handed to him on a silver platter. Sophomore Audrey McMillian is back after suffering a shoulder separation on the first play against Arkansas last season. McMillian subbed for Chinn (who was subbing for an injured Elston), who had suffered a deep thigh bruise late in the Texas A&M game, against SMU. He guided the Cougars to a 13-11 win over the Mustangs at Texas Stadium on an ABC regional telecast. Chinn may have the years at UH, but McMillian has run the veer since his freshman year at Carthage High. Challenging this pair will be Texas-El Paso Gerry (pronounced Gary) Dickens and sophomore Lionel Wilson. RUNNING BACKS 4 Lettermen 3 Redshirts 0 JC Transfers 2 Squadmen Three of the top six rushers return including senior fullbacks David Barrett and Eddie Wright, plus senior running back Allen Polk. ,fBig Back" Barrett ran for 366 yards and three touchdowns, while Wright had 280 yards and two TDs, Both averaged better than four yards a carry, Polk saw limited action, but averaged 5.7 yards a rush. The people to look for are three redshirt speedsters, Robert Durham, Dwayne Love and Dallas Wiggins. UH only averaged 3.9 yards a carry and 220.6 yards a game, both lows in the last 15 seasons for the Cougars. With the addition of the speedburners, plus the chicanery of quarterbacks Chinn and McMillian, look for these totals to increase—also look for the 32 fumbles lost in 1980 to decrease in 1981.
