Springs made one move to take the lead on the 10th lap but was held off. She kicked with 240 yards to go, passing Hayes easily and pulling away for the win. It was her 2nd win of the meet-she won the 10,000 Meters on Wednesday night. Last fall she won the NCAA Cross Country Championship. Hayes is the Collegiate Record Holder. She ran 15:33.51 in Eugene, Oregon last April. SCORING Women's through 10 Events Oregon 58, UCLA 57, Florida State 47, Stanford 44, Nebraska 43 2/3, Tennessee 39, N.C. State 37, L.A. State 28, Michigan 24, Texas 24, Arizona 24 QUOTES: Betty Jo Springs: "I knew the heat would be a factor so I didn't go out that hard. I poured water on my head to keep myself cool and that helped. I felt okay during the race but after if was over the heat really hit me. I thought this race would be delayed—if probably would have been faster. At least it's nice to have it over with. I have to give a lot of credit to Dr. Donald Baxter (Houston Orthopedic Surgeon). I went to ten different doctors with a calcium deposit in my foot and he was the only one to do anything."
