He's also won three NCAA indoor titles, including this year. He sat out last year due to a knee injury sustained in football season. He is the fifth to win three NCAA shot put titles. QUOTES: Michael Carter (SMU): "I knew in the back of mind Oregon) could hit a big one at any time. I tried to improve after the second throw, but I didn't. I couldn't hit it right. I didn't do enough weight training (this past week). I've been here since last Saturday. A lot of people didn't expect me to come back like I did (from a knee injury). I'm real happy. When I was rehabilitating, I was thinking about this meet. I'd have hated to lose this one. I wanted to keep my string alive (6 straight NCAA indoor and outdoor titles). My goal is eight straight. Last year was just terrible. Akins (Kevin) and Lehman (Mike) were throwing well. I was just reading their clippings and waiting till next year. I had to start all over on my technique. I still haven't gotten it where I want it. I had a bet with Keith Connor (of SMU), if he jumped 58 in the triple, I'd throw 70. The bet was dinner, I don't guess either of us will win." DEAN CROUSER, who finished third and was the defending champion: "I beat myself, really. I thought I could just go out and win it. Guess I will just have to go back and work on it." SCORING THROUGH 13 EVENTS: SMU 72, Oregon 50, Alabama 49, Washington St. 47; Texas 41; Tennessee 41.
