Texas' Smith led through the early parts of the race before Thomas of Indiana made his move. QUOTES: Sven Nylander, a 21-year-old freshman mid-term transfer student at SMU from Karlstad, Sweden: "No, I didn't think I could win it. I was looking for about fourth. I pushed myself pretty hard in the trials and thought I could run a personal best (49.64). In the back of my mind, I thought I might could win it, but realistically, I didn't think so. I usually change my pattern from 13 steps to 14 steps at the sixth hurdle, but I felt good today and kept it all the way through the eighth hurdle. And then I changed to 15 steps the last two hurdles. In the last 100 there was only one guy ahead (Thomas) and he seemed to misjudge the 10th hurdle and I went ahead. This was a real experience for me. The biggest race before this was the European championships. That has the top guys in Europe, but there are a lot of good athletes at the NCAA too.' it (How SMU's coach Ted McLaughlin figured him in the race): " He was pleased with me reaching the finals and thought maybe a fourth or fifth place would be in reach, but I don't think he expected me to win it. I knew I didn't. MEN'S SCORING: (After five events) SMU 44; Tennessee 28; Indiana 27; Alabama 26; Washington 22; BYU 21; Oregon 21; Arizona State 19.
