Transcript NOTES AND QUOTES HAL UNDERWOOD became the first player to win the All America tournament 2 times. He won in 1967 and 1968. Homero Blancas of UH and Don Essig of LSU each won the tournament one time and tied for the Championship once. Underwood will go down in history as one of the all time great collegiate players. Some of his accomplishments are as follows: Selected by NCAA Golf Coaches as Number 1 player in the nation; Shot 21 under par in 26 rounds of competition his sophomore year; Played on 2 National Championship Teams and one National Runner- Up team; Ranked Number One Amateur in United States by Golf Digest for 1967; Won 8 Collegiate tournaments and was co-champion of another; Runner-up in NCAA Championships in 1968; Selected on NCAA Golf Coaches First Team of the All America team in 1967 and 1968. The All America was televised last year by KTRK-TV Channel 13 for the 4th straight year. This is the only Collegiate tournament ever televised. Parker Bros, was the sponsor for the tournament last year. Over 10,000 people came out last year for the tournament and we have larger and larger galleries each year. A goal of $35,000 has been set for ticket sales for the 1969 All America. Ample concession stands were available for the first time last year. Paul Wahlberg, President of the Pine Forest Country Club did a great job obtaining this service for the tournament. ******** SOME QUOTES FROM THE 1968 ALL AMERICA GINGER BALDWIN, wife of UH Freshman Football Coach Bobby Baldwin . . . "I've watched golf on TV for years and never thought too much of it ... I went out and watched the final day of the All America and I want to tell you this was the most exciting sporting event I have ever watched . . . I'm going to start playing golf this coming week." Football Coach MELVIN BROWN . . . "I'd like to know the TV rating on the All America golf tournament yesterday . . . All the people at Church Sunday were talking about it." TONY BRUNO . . . "With all the gallery hollering Hook 'em Horns . . . Eat 'em Cougars, and Hail Cougars . . . Hail Yes ... I thought I was at a football or basketball game . . . I've never seen anything like it." ******** C. T. JONES . . . 'This had to be the most exciting golf championship ever played ... in the history of the game . . . can you imagine 6 championships being decided on the final hole . . . and UH vs. Texas at that." 46
