She serves as the Texas representative to Southwest AIAW and is the voting delegate to AIAW. A coach for 14 years, the university administrator received a bachelor of science in education degree and a master of science degree from Central Missouri State in Warrensburg, Mo. Her Ph.D. is from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Before coming to UH, the Dixon, Mo., native was associate director of athletics at North Texas State University. Ruth Nelson Ruth Nelson, who was an assistant coach for the U.S. women's 1980 Olympic volleyball team, is in her seventh season as the University of Houston's volleyball coach. Her first UH team (1974) placed fourth in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) National Championships with the Cougars finishing third the next season, fifth in 1976 and in 1979. The Cougars won the Region IV AIAW championship in 1974 and 1975. In 1979, the team won TAIAW, as well as the Southwest AIAW championship. The 1970 graduate of the University of Northern Colorado (Greeley) has a degree in physical education and psychology and a master's degree in physical education from George William. Nelson has been player-coach of the U.S. Volleyball Association (USVBA) team, the Houston Stars, the last four years with the team tying for fifth in the AAU Nationals in Chicago in the summer of 1979. She coached the U.S. Collegiate Sports Council women's team to a fifth place finish in the 1979 World University Games in Mexico City, plus the South squad to a gold medal finish—and the Midwest squad to a bronze medal at the U.S. Sports Festival in Colorado Springs in the summer of 1979.
