HARRIS COUNTY Jan. 12, 1963 reported by Ralph Hunter The temperature was 20° when an amazingly large group of foolhardy birders met at Barker Dam on the morning of Jan. 12 for a field trip to western Harris County. Sitting in our warm cars, we could laugh at the awkward tumblings of crows and blackbirds as they tried to rise against the bitter north wind. Only later, when leaving the cars and feeling the Artie's breath over the prairies, could we appreciate their fortitude. Dave Marrack, our leader, distributed copies of a route map with notations on what birds to look for. A very useful innovation! We first passed through the swampy bottoms behind Barker Dam, where Sandhill Cranes flew right over us. At one point along hawthorn-bordered Barker-Clodine Road, Purple Finches were sighted by the lead car. Dave Marrack again demonstrated his good
