Transcript Religious Coalition for Abortion Rights 100 Maryland Avenue, N.E., Washington, D.C. 20002 (202) 543-7032 Fall, 1977 DISPATCH #95-5 » Action Needed: A PROTEST TO THE PRESIDENT BACK- During the 1976 election campaign Candidate Carter met with the Cath- GROUND olic bishops to discuss abortion, but refused to meet with Protestant and Jewish leaders on this issue. In February, 1977, RCAR wrote to the President requesting a meeting with "leaders of a significant segment of the religious communities who support the Constitutional right to abortion." This request was denied via a pre-printed postcard signed by a low-level White House aide. In June, 1977, we established a contact in the White House Office of Public Liaison and began negotiations for a meeting between the President and the national leaders of our denominations. On August 11, a letter formally requesting such a meeting was presented to Margaret Costanza, Director of the Office of Public Liaison, for delivery to Carter. It was signed by the following religious leaders: Dr. Harvard Anderson Moderator Presbyterian Church in the U.S. The Reverend Paul Carnes President Unitarian Universalist Association Rabbi Balfour Brickner Director of Interreligious Activities Union of American Hebrew Congregations Bette Chambers President American Humanist Association Leonna F. Chanin Co-Chair, Governing Council American Jewish Congress Paul Gellert President American Ethical Union Dr. Kenneth Teegarden General Minister and President Disciples of Christ The Reverend John T. Conners Moderator United Presbyterian Church, U.S. Dr. Charles G. Smith President American Baptist Churches Bishop Joseph Yeakel President, Board of Church and Society United Methodist Church Shortly thereafter, these two denominations joined in the request: William Lazareth Director, Dept. of Church and State Lutheran Church in America Avery Post President United Church of Christ - over -
