Transcript PROGRESS REPORT #1 DATE.' June 18, 19 & 2Q, 1982 PLACE! to be announced TYPE OF CONVENTION: Nostalgia with emphasis on Science Fiction & Fantasy DETAILS: We are busting a gut to make this HoustonCon the best this city has ever seen. To achieve this goal, we are currently negotiating with the Royal Coach (where the most successful conventions have been held in past years); however, we are prepared to choose another hotel if they won't come to terms. Guests we are trying to attract have, never been to Houston before. It is also important to have the quality of guests which will make the convention worth traveling great distances to attend. We are inviting Bob Asprin to be ToastMaster (he'll really keep the parties going!) Additional guests will be announced in future Progress Reports. Why a three day convention? When the committee returned from WorldCon, we were quite worn out (some of us even had to go back to work to rest up.) Most people can wrangle a Friday off or can trade working the previous Saturday, but only a few people can get two working days off without cuting into their vacation time. Four days is too long and two days is too short, so that's why we opted for a three day con. PLOTING: in addition to the fun we'll be having, There'll be serious business to which to address ourselves. Texas falls neither in the DeepSouthCon nor the WesterCon biding area. It has been proposed that Texas have its' own state-wide convention, perhaps rotating among the major cities. The first proposal is that we have WesterCon style convention which would initially encompass Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and New Mexico with an eye on including Kansas and Missouri when they are ready. This is an official call to all interested parties to cuss and discuss this at HoustonCon. MEMBERSHIP: only supporting memberships are now being accepted at $3. They may be converted to attending memberships when we publish the rate schedule in the next issue of Progress Reports. AUSTIN IN 85: Austrailia lost its' bid for WorldCon in 1983,,so Melbourne is biding for 1985. So, Austin is biding to host the North American Science Fiction Convention in 1985. Let's all get behind them and support them. For information write to Robert Taylor, P O BOX 9612, Austin, TX 78766. REPUBLIC OF TEXAS IN '88: w*>en Melbourne decided to bid for the World Science Fiction Convention in '85, we decided not to bid against them. Instead, we decided to bid to host WorldCon in our country in 1988. If you are interested in working on the biding committee, come to HoustonCon '82.
