TitleLetter to Cromwell Anson Jones, [24 October 1869]
CreatorJones, Mary Smith McCrory
DescriptionLetter from Mary Jones, wife of the last president of the Republic of Texas.
TranscriptOct 24th 1869 [in another's hand] Sunday My Dear Dear Son Your several letters gave me much relief, in regard to the Goliad land Matter, I will not (even if I had the money) send it to Mr L. My impression was right in regard to how the matter should be settled in case I paid the Taxes to him - I wish much to see you soon and will go up for that purpose when Sam comes home and until I do see you will do nothing further in the matter, except to write to Lane a non Committal epistle in which I will only ask a few questions, But I have no doubt of the fact of Lanes having paid the Taxes, as he says he has for for the years 1867& /68 & has rendered it for the present year - I will send you his first letter to look at; Return it to me, I will put him off for a while longer upon some pretext or other until we can asser tain positively to whom the Tax money should be paid. The amount 2 [_].95 cts us for the two years /67& /68, so it brings the Taxes lower that we had thought until I refer- ed to his first letter - I think realy the only question is who to pay the money to and to get the proper quittance from the same - I wish to get enough wood cut by that time to pay all my taxes on our out lands & the state & Co taxes on this place - --------------------------------------------------- to try to hire me one or two woodchoppers either white or black no matter which I do so deeply regret that you are sick so much I am sure you get up too soon after taking medicine & again I doubt not but you are not prudent in what you eat, or the quantity either, about the time you expect a return you should be particu= larly abstemious in eating suppers par- ticularly, and indeed it will be well to be careful for the period of a month or more, I still think it advisable for you to have the Bitters as I directed, as it is one of the best Tonics I know off Should you continue to have these sick spells you will be obliged to give up your place for a week or ten days and try to recruit, as neglect may make it necessary to give it up all together Which I as well as yourself would regret I signed the Document In Sam's presence and Mr S can have him go before a Notary at his Sydnors expense of course. I do do not know whether I have done right in signing it or not, as the transfer I made was to Carnes & Sydnor as well as I remember ask Mr S if it was not so made at any rate I do not suppose the heirs of Mr Carnes can ever disturb me in any way. Yet in regard to that I am not [pe_ted]. Doubtless it is all right as it is --------------------------------------------- I am so glad you wrote Bonner as you did although I do not think he answered all your questions fully Yet he may have said all that is as necessary for him to say The conflic tions of claims upon the Goliad land was settled seven years since by compromise and deeds exchanged and lines run - So there is no room for Mr L's getting a fee out of me and I will inform him of these facts when I write him again The material you sent to make your drawers of was a very poor arti -cle indeed, I hope you did not pay a very high price for it - Let me know what the price of the four yds of red flannel as it was for Betsey also the spool thread With best wishes my dear child I am as ever your loving Mother M Jones.
