Transcript[Letter from Henry Cowing to Mary Jones, ca. December 1872 or January 1873] Mrs Mary Jones Madam - I am [on] way to Matagorda for the purpose of commencing suite and taking [depassions] for to remove the cloud from my title of the two labours of land on Matagorda penenceler [i.e. peninsula] at the mouth of Caney, and being as Joseph E Fields in now getting old and life unsertaine and being so much pleased and convinced of youre desire to do right and your promis not to interfere with my clame, I could not comence such a suit where it would be published without calling and leting you know, and to see if you would wish to avoide it be giving me a transfer Now the Case stands thus in Jany 1837 Joseph E Fields agrees with E K Whightmore to exchange his quarter League of land for sed two labours of land at the head of the penenceler [i.e. peninsula] Sed Whightmore contract was swore to by a subscribing witness in 1842 Mr Anson Joneses title is gived or dated the twe[l]vth of June 1837, without meets or bounds simbly agreeing refiring to the intrist in the above Contract which transfir which transfer[sic] was sworn to be one of the subscribing witness of 19 Oct 1840 And received for record 1849, and Allso the contract the same day You will be plesed to write me at Corpus Christi and to [ ] Matagorda so that it will find me either at one place or the other I will further state that both the two Labours and half of the quarter League was sould for by the Collector of taxes of the County for Convention tax of 1868 and purchased by Joseph Forrester and redeemed by me in 1870 a purch[as]ing his Title. over ------------------------------------------------------------------- Now Madam I think that these are all the Items I can give you. You will be plesed to diside and let me know as soon as possable and if you Conclude to give me the transfer be sending it to me properly acknoledged I will pay for within the deed and acknoledging Yours Sincerely Henry Cowing [In another's hand]: December 1842 or Jany 1843
