| Transcript | Saturday July 9th 1881 My Dear Son I wrote you the day after reach- -ing here, and again the 6th have but one Postal Card from you - & two papers - I feel confident that I am being greatly benefited by the use of the waters & bathing which is per -fectly delightful. I now take the mudy [sic] water bath between ten & eleven, in place of at sunrise as I first commenced, for the reason that it was too cold so early for a Rheumatic. The sour bath I take just before bed time, say at about 9 Oclock And I think it perfectly splendid oh how good one feels & how well I sleep after it. My bed is rather hard but I turn over and the oftener. In all else I have nothing to complain of - Mr. Willis is here and is having improvements made all the time. He says he wants to do all he can do to make visitors more comfortable in the present buildings and to have provided for them food that will be healthy and palatable That by next season he will have every -thing on an entirely new & better scale I have made the acquaintance of him and his wife, both pleasant sensible people. They eat with the boarders and he has inspected every nook & corner & has added to the comfort of all here over fifty regular boarders, and about the same number of campers ------------------------------------------------- It is a continual coming & going. I meet pleasant nice ladies all the time and from all sections, both in & out of Texas I have just returned from taking my mud bath, cant say I enjoy it at all and would not go into it but that it is said to be so good for Rheumtism [sic]. It is a filthy looking pool, my eyes are feeling very much improved I broke my far seeing spectacles, consequent- ly I dont use my eyes so much only to write and read a few items in the Papers. Am feeling very well my kidneys have been powerfully acted on either by bathing or drinking water from a certain wells which act on the kidneys & bowels liver too at the same time I will write to Sam tomorrow hope to hear form you & him too would like so much for Ell to be here a few days - I don't think of staying longer than two weeks - children under twelve years of age are charged half price - My throat has been was sorer here for a few days than it was at home now it is perfectly well, all that inordinate thirst is gone. I have not craved to drink since I have been here. Now it may be owing to my having to drink when I do not want water or it may be drinking the acid water, my appe- -tite is splendid, and nothing I eat disagrees with me - Evidently my liver is acting better than it has for a long time past indeed I feel that I am being benefited every day ----------------------------------------------------------- I write amid all kinds of confusion so you will have to excuse my disjointed letters - Then too I have to write in a warm room, with dim light, on top of a wash -stand for table - We had preaching here Thursday night I did not go down as I had undressed before I knew of it Tomorrow there will be service here by two Catholic Priests. There are a great many French people here, some of them are residents, others visitors for health No rain yet - in this section - what is to become of our people, corn almost a total failure and cotton beginning to need rain, vegetables [sic] dried up and water becoming scarce - Take care of our good cistern water. I often think of our dear little home, so nice & clean, and wonder how all the dear ones there are getting along - Sallie wrote me the 1st that her baby was now well , and trying to walk - and that she had a good servant I earnestly hope you may be able to come over here for a few days, even a few days here would be of great service - Try to come With much love to Sam & Elliot if in Houston In love Your Mother Mary Jones [Written on the verso of the 2nd sheet]: I hope to hear for you or Saml the next mail that comes in MJ |
