| Transcript | Galveston Sunday July 18th [1869] My dear Son On Wednesday last I came down here with Mrs Harrison as she was not well and was obliged to come down on business. It is well I came with her as the loss of sleep & fatigue made her quite sick by the time we lan- ded, and all the day after we got in But now she is up, and seems as well as usual and today I return home I met Mr Underwood & he is going up with me, or rather on the same Boat & has promised to hand you this note -- hastily written. I was so glad to hear from you, while I regret to learn that Mr. Symons family are in such deep sorrow, give my kind regards and sym pathy to them. Mr. Bell returned and now I am going to make some wine, he will make it for me. Can you send me two empty barrels and about fifty lbs of sugar. I do not know how you can send them perhaps on some sail Boat to Sams at the Point, and he can bring them over to me should you meet with a safe oppor- tunity write me a few lines and send me if you can three dollars in cur- rency as I had to borrow that much of Miss Howland to pay my way back home as I hired Betsey the --------------------------------------------- negro woman Mrs Norrison had last spring she has promised to stay with me until October or perhaps longer, I have to give her twelve dollars per month Mrs H will pay half of the amount as she has promis- ed to do so. Now when I go home if this woman does go with me, I intend to clear out some of the lazy ones there, Miss H among the number as she too sets down for me to cook for her and says she "did not come there to work, and that she enjoys setting on the Galery in the cool breeze" I like to set in the cool too, much better than waiting on and old crazy Yankee like her. I never did have any use for her. We left her at our house I like the dime tobaco it is good enough to smoke but I have to last me for some time to come I want to dry some Figs if they are not getting scarce when I get home I will scald them in a syrup & dry them & some Peaches also - I deeply regret to hear of the loss by water, as much suffering will be the result. Money is being raised here for the rel- ief of the sufferers; Mrs Harrison sends love to you & will write you in a few days - she will come up next Sunday: if she keeps well, Mrs Allen has gone North & Pitt down west nothing has been done for me yet but Pitt told Fontain he would do me justice. perhaps so, we will see. Write me often as I shall feel anxious to hear from you. Come when you can. From your loving Mother M Jones. |
