| Description | Letter from Mary Jones, wife of the last president of the Republic of Texas. |
| Transcript | Willis Nov 30th 1880 Tuesday Evening 4 O'clock My Dear Son. I write you again today as I am still further delayed by Sallies protracted ill- ness. She has had a continued low fever for two days past; beside being Salivated slightly she looks very badly - and feels so depressed about her condition - last night & all day today she has been suffered greatly from con- tinued nausea [sic] occasionally vomiting. Both her & Gaston feared Doct. Powel was not doing all that could be done, and this morning Gaston got Doct. Jordan to come up, and pre- scribe for her. I can see a change already in her, and so soon as her stomach is in a con- dition to take Iron & other tonics, I think she will improve - Everything worries her so much particularly detaining me so long and the fear that she will entirely loose her milk and have to raise her baby as she did the others which is attended with trouble & exposure at of the mother at night. Poore [sic] sufferer her fate seems so very sad - as she said ---------------------------------------------------------- yesterday "what a fate has been mine, suffering in some form all the time." I feel that everything that I can do to help her comforts her so much - and will aid her recovery - If I can only keep well myself is all I ask - I commit all to the all wise God whose ways are beyond our comprehension - I feel sometimes almost bereft of my senses - away from home so long & in discom- fort too fearing I may get sick myself You had better look around for a wife to see after your home, what think you of this proposition Your Mother Mary Jones Doct Powel will be in Houston in a few days from now, say nothing to him of Doct J's being called to see Sallie. This weather has been so unfavorable to Sallie, indeed well people can scarcely stand it |
