| Description | Letter from Mary Jones, wife of the last president of the Republic of Texas. |
| Transcript | Willis Feb, y 17th 1879 My Dear Son Your favor of the 15th Inst was received yesterday. The ten dollar bill came safely, and today I will avail myself of the pleasent weather and go down Town to make some purchases & pay some debts as before mentioned &c &c I spend money for nothing but absolute necessaries as I will know that you must be hard run with Saml and me both to pro- vide for, beside your own expenses, and just over with a Campaign, which is as bad as a flood, & storm. I appreci -ate your condition my dear child most fully, and earnestly wish to be able to relieve you While in the main time I don't want to annoy you constantly be telling you so. Yet in the fullness of the heart the mouth speaketh" I find the ground quite rich in the garden and can but ---------------------------------------------------- think I shall have ample reward for my labor Now I am not intending to supply a public market, but hope to make a large supply of home living, very -fying [sic] the old adage that a penny saved is as good as one made &c &c. After a little time one of my big items of expense will be over with, I mean wood I wrote to Saml today my last letter To Baltimore. He will be able to do some work here before settling down, as many have saved a job for him. We are having such delightful clear weather, tho rather cold for early gardening. I feel more & more pleased every day at having a home to myself. I feel that it has already re- vived my energies, and is benefiting my health. What if I do find myself fatigued by night!! I sleep all the better for it, and rise in the morning conscious of feeling re- freshed by a good nights sleep. I [do not] miss that constant, restless, uneasy feeling which has robed me of many nights --------------------------------------------------- sweet sleep for several years past. The truth of the matter is simply this, I was not happy for the reason that I could not employ myself in a way that suited me. And beside was constantly annoyed by the seeing, and hearing, the annoyances of those about me and not able to busy myself in any way to to benefit either them, or myself I find my health is constantly improving Elliot is better also, as I am now able to control him & keep him in when the weather is unfavorable to his health With best wishes and much love from your Mother Mary Jones. [Written in pencil on the final page] Elliot is so impatient to see His Papa I think it is too bad That we will not be much With him when he does return |
