| Transcript | Willis Nov. 2nd./78 My Dear Son, Everything here seems to be work- -ing well and quietly - so far as one can judge The only thing that don't look right is that US. Marshal who came up last evening gave our democratic friends the slip & went over to Montgomery this morning in company with Linton, he had made a ingagment to go with Gaston & some others today in a hack. This don't look right after his professions of de- mocracy &c &c last evining. A democratic negro made a speech to a mixed crowd last night in which he reiterated the threat he heard Retfroe make in a speech to a crowd of negroes. "That they the Rads would carry this election &c &c" all of which has been published Mr. U S Marshal heard the negroes speech stood near & heard all [of] it But notwithstanding he sneaked went off this morning in company with that vile Radical Linton which is in keeping with all they Do. still further Gaston has just come in & ------------------------------------------------------------------- says the reason he & other democrats did not accom- pany the U S Marshal to Mont[gomery] was because he was in company with Linton he L. claiming the protect -tion of the U S Marshal. I hope Mr. Ashe will not fail to be here next Tuesday. God grant our party success is my earnest wish Mr McComb told us all the news of Harris Co. beside what we get in the Papers. Victory no doubt will crown the efforts of this Co. Yet I fear some trouble before it is over - While I pray there may be none _ Your election Mr. McComb seemed to think was certain. I hope so The Post office money order you sent Gaston came safely With best wishes affectionately M Jones |
