| Transcript | Sunday Oct 29th My Dear Son I have delayed replying to your very interesting letter of the 3rd Inst; hoping you might come up. As I could talk up matters with you better that I can write them up I would have gone down to see you as I am will aware of the fact that you have but little time to devote to visiting. But am afraid to make the attempt in a Waggon while the flies are so troublesome. I fear an other fall - just as I reached this point in my letter Sam came out to see us spent the day and is now on his way back, and as we are alone again I proceed. Gas Mr Grove & C[h]arlie have gone to Grand Lake today partly on some business & partly to fish and hunt there & back, so we are alone; Sam told me of having received a short note from you in which you spoke of being upon the eve of a trip down to our old home &c &c he could not find the note to bring it to me as you had requested ------------------------------------------------------------- I hope to hear from you soon when you will doubtless explain the matter fully. Sams present intention is to open a restaurant in connexion I think with Charlie Jordan; All he said about it was that he saw nothing better to go at" he never even alludes to any plans for me, or in connecxion even with me in regard to our plans last spring. I can get a log room put up here with very little cost; say about twenty dol- lars which is so far as I know the best thing to do. But I do not know yet when it can be done Mr. Morgan who has promised to do the work has to finish picking out & get his Cotton to the gin before he can commence the work. I have ten dollars yet of the $20 you sent me as you were leaving for the North, therefore will have to ask for you can send me an other ten dol. which I think will be ample. We propose to put it up the room on as cheap a plan as possible as Gaston is determined to leave this section at the earliest moment he pos- sibly can get away ------------------------------------------------------------- I regret so much having to be in any way a burden to you as I well know you have use for all the means you have. I have been very thin if flesh all summer but since the cool weather am regaining my flesh and feel perfectly well, have finally recovered from the effects of my the severe hurt from the fall our of the waggon last August Mrs. Hampton sends in to Grand Lake every Thursday - I mention this so that in the event you wish to come up any time you could mail a letter the day before so we could get it Friday morning & meet you there any day you might fix upon therafter. Mr Long has been here again spent two days this time he told me the particulars of the late fire in Houston said you and others in Gray building moved out expecting it too would be consumed by the fire I rejoice that it was not as I know you would have sustained loss & been put to inconvenience and expense. I have read you letter & the papers you have sent with much interest ------------------------------------------------------------------ [Written upside down across the top of page 4] Mrs Ashe spoke of Mr Ashe & her intending to pay a visit soon, tell her we will be very glad to see them and the little ones Remember me kindly to Miss Mary Ashe ----------------------------------------------------------------- I have heard of Mr Greggs return did he bring any one back with him?? this is however a profound secret in the keeping of a number of us We have just corned & sugar cured and fried some of it one of the largest and fattest beeves I have seen in a long time it is perfectly delicious. Monday morning. Last night after dark Mrs Ashe letter of the 22nd Inst reached me. I deliv -ered her message to Mr. Grove. Please say to her that I would like very much to be at the recep -tion party, but cannot see any way of getting our of this thicket; Gaston is now busy gin ning pretty much all the time; Sallie & he expect to take the children in to Willis to the Show, some one will stay with me while they are gone.
