| Transcript | Willlis Sept. 1st./78 Dear Son Friday evening we got our freight Molasses & Potatoes all safe. Both very nice articles - but woman [i.e. women] like [me] still want something else, Onions if you can find any Northern raised in the market. I would not trouble you with such things but realy there is no- thing here to be had in the vegita- -ble line. I could but think it was lucky your getting off Thursday morning before that hard rain came up. Last night I went with the family to hear some Po- -litical speaking. Mr. McComb & others tho by the nay when Mr. Mc finished it was too late for others to say much as it was then half after ten Oclock. I enjoyed Mr. McCombs discourse very much notwithstanding it there was rather ---------------------------------------------------- too much detail for the occasion, but there is an earnest bold determination in his manner I liked much. Elliot went with us & listen -ed very attentively for an hour, or more un -til he became sleepy when he said to me "Mama how will you make that man stop" talking preaching" Gaston says to tell you that the Democratic Club met here yesterday afternoon eight Negres [sic] joined it. Much enthusiasm manifested, our speakers are very boldly declare that "We can & will carry this election peaceably if we can if not be force of arms" or any way to put down radical rule in our Co. "Amen I say) Gas says the Pump does nicely Mrs. Ashe & Children are well & are still at Mr. Jordans. I have nothing of interest to com- municate.. Were all keep well. Keep a look -out for Yellow fever, and be sure to get away in time to avoid danger of getting it in your system. Both his horses have been sick again, one, his campaign horse is now in bad plight Baby the Childrens little Mare was killed by the Train last Sunday morning. Gas says this is some more of my "bad luck." The good luck is that he will without doubt be elected Sheriff. And doubt -less he will get from the Rail Road $75 dollars for the little mare. I see by the Papers price current of Onions & Potatoes are very cheap, this however may be wholesale prices. Use your own judgment in purchasing there are none in this market ------------------------------------------ I wish you could send me up some nice syrup in a jug or demajohn [i.e. demijohn] about four, or five gallons. All the molasses we get sours or rather is sour when we get it. Also being me a quart of best Whiskey MJ |
