CreatorJones, Mary Smith McCrory
DescriptionLetter from Mary Jones, wife of the last president of the Republic of Texas.
TranscriptWillis Monday June 10th 1878 My Dear Son Your letter of the 8th Inst with our amount was received & while I rejoice that you were a little too fast for the dispatch and got the money I do not wish to have any change made in my favor just at this time particularly as both Sam and Sallie are so much in need of money while you dear generous soul deserve more than any one of us. I often exclaim why is it, that my means are so inadequate to my wishes. But I must not murmur, but on the contrary, feel thankful that I have what I have, and try to make a judicious use of it. I am thinking some of going down to spend a few days, for two reasons first of all, to recuperate my wasted strength, as I have been rite sick again and I wish to talk up some matters with you. I can if nothing occurs to prevent go down any day after Wednsday. Let me me know if at that time you will have leisure to attend to my numerous wants I do not propose staying but a few days as Sallie commenced teaching this --------------------------------------------------- morning after a weeks vacation to assist in moving, and her health is very poor she has not been well for over two weeks We have a good servant but we have to keep a close lookout for our sup- plies &c &c and not being yet fixed up I see to everything after Sallie goes into the school room. She is teaching in her own room at home, as she is not able to go down to the Church. We have had a fine rain In love Your Mother Mary Jones [Written along lower bottom of letter's verso] I have written with a pencil as I am too nervous to write with pen & ink. Sallie sent by Mrs. Ashe for some things please say to her to not make any purchases until I come down. I will bring her childrens Books &c &c
