| Transcript | Willis March 10th./78 My Dear Son I suppose you have heard from Samuel before this. I have received one letter dated today week March 3rd just to say he had reached there safely. he had not seen Professor Gregus but intended to call on him Monday. Said commencement day was the 7th in place of the 5th Sam speaks of the scenery down the Potomac River as being beautiful. he said he had seen much to interest him &c &c And that so soon as he become[s] located he would write again. Well we are about as far ahead getting things to straightened as when you were here. Both Sallie & Elliot have been sick with colds both are now better. Gaston has not bee able to finish moving on account of a swelling on one of his horses shoulder, has got a mule now & will go our there tomorow for some more of our things and after that [is] done will bring in his cows -------------------------------------------------------------- Mr. Irving has sold his place to Mr Jobe Tomison Jun, who only purchased it to sell again. And Gaston is trying to purchase it of Tomison as there is a gin house and Tank already and a pretty fair dwell -ing house orchard & garden, it is the place you pass just beyond the Saloon on the road going our to Mr, Goldings. We all wish so much he could get it. Mr Irving told Gaston he ground from one hundred to one & fifty bushels of corn every week and that he Gined from two hundred to as high as four hundred bales of Cotton, owing to the crop If you can do so hurry up the sale of the Bastrop land as every little [bit] will help him to raise $4.50 dollars for the first payment the other two payments he could make by ginning & selling corn, & meal. I have offered to lend my part of the Bastrop sale, or rather a part of it, the interest on the same to be applied for my living instead of paying them money as now. And will require Gaston to put me up a comfortable room this fall, with the principle, that is in case I want room put up on his lot. In case Gaston gets the above mentioned place we will ---------------------------------------------------------- leave this bed bug den about the middle or last of May God grant how soon as I think we will be nearly devoured when warm weather comes & they come out in young reinforcements as will be the case when the present deposit if eggs hatch out. I keep very well, Sallie will this week go out and see whether she can get any encouragement in getting up a school, or a few music scholars Mrs Golding has received a letter from her Cousin Mrs Jones the day you left here ( I read it) She says that she will use every means to get up all the evidence of the heirship & their Great Grand fathers ownership everything relating to the subject But she says she fears that it has gone to the crown in default of heirs coming forward &c &c With best wishes and much love from Your Mother Mary Jones Write soon |
