TitleLetter to Cromwell Anson Jones, 15 January 1878
CreatorJones, Mary Smith McCrory
DescriptionLetter from Mary Jones, wife of the last president of the Republic of Texas.
TranscriptWillis Jan, y 15 1878 My Dear Son Yours of the 12th Inst, only reached me yesterday afternoon; Sam informed me Sunday evening that he had enquired for letters that morning. Yet I did not get the registered letter and money $25. dollars until yesterday. And of course I did not think it worth while to go down to see Mr. Pierce not knowing but that he had left by this time. And beside the River is high and I feared the bridge might not be safe, at this time and last tho not least the weather is too cold for me to leave home with safety and comfort as I still have cold. I paid Mrs. Gold ing yesterday for my second months board. Have not heard from Sallie & family since they left here the 2nd Inst. Have I told you that Brother had written to me to come up and spend this year with him? he has rented out all his land as his Son Squire has left him, he is in Comanche Co. where William is living ------------------------------------------------------------- they are both going into the stock raising business Brother seemed to regret his leaving just now as he could not give him any assistance until next year. As he said it would take what he could spare of the last years crop to finish pay -ing for the place he had purchased of Williams his family is now reduced to five, himself and wife & three children. Brother said that he had made thirty bales of cotton & everything else in abundance the past year, and that so soon as he finished paying for the place he had purchased of Williams he would feel quite independent, as he owed no other debts Well I cannot think of anything to write of the least interest to you. Sam is putting some small houses up for Doct Jordan, one is for a drug store, the other a servants room. I see him but seldom, his excuse is that he is busy all the time he told me that during the Christmas hol/ idays he made money sometimes as much as $20. of an evening but now people are turning their attention to other matters and his business consequently is becoming dull. ------------------------------------------------------------- Several papers come yesterday _ I have read "The Sun" with much interest it seems to be a stiring up Texas interests With much love from your Mother Mary Jones.
