| Transcript | Montgomery Co. Crystal Augt 30th 1876 Dear Son As I have an opportunity of sending to Grand Lake tomorrow I seize the a moment to devote to you; as you are much in my thoughts. I cannot realize the part that you are so far from me, if I did I believe it would make me feel very sad. Notwith standing my anxiety for you to have an opportunity of visiting the Fair and all other places of interest North where you will see so much Yours of the 19th Inst, with the money $20 dollars inclosed and Map of Texas came duly to hand; Also about the same time a number of papers. The evening of the day I wrote you the short & hurried note just to say all were well, we went over to Mr. Wiggins to spend the evening Met Sam near there & he went ------------------------------------------------------ back with us & spent the evening with us Upon our return at the Creek we all were getting out of the waggon before crossing, as the late rains had washed it so as to make it dangerous crossing All were out of the waggon but myself when I raised up to jump out over at the hind end the horses made a spring forward throwing me out on my head. All thought the fall had killed me & so soon as I could think at all I fully expected that the injuries would cause my death in the course of a few hours, or days, but strange to say no bones were broken and I recovered from the worst of the jar & bruises in a few days so as to be up & now feel perfectly well. Yet there is soreness in my neck & shoulders which I hope to recover from in time, had I fallen on any thing hard such as stumps roots poles logs or any thing except --------------------------------------------------- in the wagon rut in soft sand I would have been killed instantly as ti was the skin was only broken over & around my left eye. Sam carried me in his arms over the creek and placed me in the waggon & held me up until we reached home & then he carried me into my room How forcibly this sad accident reminded me that in the midst of life we are in the midst of death also I hope you may have a delightful trip. I anticipate much pleasure in hearing you recital of all the wonderful "[ ] " My constant prayer is for your safety and happiness This leaves us all in us- ual health , except Sallie she is quite complaining from debility We are still having very not weather accompanied with frequent rains With much love & best wishes From Your Mother Mary Jones |
