| Description | Letter from Mary Jones, wife of the last president of the Republic of Texas. |
| Transcript | Willis Oct 18th./75 Dear Son I write to inform you that we are in our new -ly rented house & almost "fixed" up moved the day after you left us. I am so much pleased with the place and feel so much happier, it is so quiet & retired & then the fire place is such a comfort to me, altho, it is not cold much, yet, a little fire at night is so comforta- ble. I had thought of coming down about the last of this week but have almost given it out on the score of saving the expense of the trip. At any rate as I feel so undecided past this time, I wish you to send me up some fresh Turnip seed & Beet seed also. We have planted Turnip seed but fear it is not good Beet seed we cannot get here. The Shaker seeds are more likely to be fresh about a Teacup full of each kind. We could help pay rent with a good Turnip patch I think at any rate we want to make the effort. The carpet came Satur day have not put it down yet, but will do so soon -------------------------------------------------------------------- and it will add greatly to the comfort of my room as the floor is not perfectly tight. The shed rooms leak but not worse than the house we left. Kitchen is tolerably comfortable & roomy we eat in it all together we are much more comfortable here, and all like the change. Wood is convenient to get so much that the storm blew down. I had a long letter form Sam dated the 9th he was staying at Mr. Sydnors. Said he had found but little of his effects none of his furniture or bedding but had found his black coat & all his shoes & part of his tools his Photograph album with the pictures somewhat damaged a China Cup which belonged to Jennie The white flat Turnip I would prefer & some Rutagba -ga Turnip seed also and Marronfat pea, about a a Teacup full of each. I don't know the quantity by weight Gaston has not bee[n] here since you left all are well. With best wishers and much love as ever your loving Mother Mary Jones. send the seed up Tomorrow if possible I have a heap to do. My room looks realy nice & cozy |
