| Description | Letter from Mary Jones, wife of the last president of the Republic of Texas. |
| Transcript | Willis April 13th, /75 My Dear Son I write you few lines by Mrs. Ashe, but am not able to give you my ideas of the place as I have not been out of the yard since I en- tered it, have not been well, took an additional cold the first night as the house is as of pen as a brush fence was quite sick one day & night but kept my bed & took medicine am up today but not free form cough and cold. When warm weather does set in we will no doubt have as full benefit of it [as] we now have of cold & dampness. Well in few words we are all huddled up in a very small shell of a house. so soon as I am able to do anything we intend trying our wits at putting things up & away --------------------------------------------- so as to give ourselves more room I was a little surprised at Gastons inviting you here to attend a chicken fight. poor amus[e]ment I think for men I have Mr Gailliard was telling me of his having some fine silver forks in Houston for sale & that he had offered them for $75. dollars I have thought whether it would not be a good exchange on my part to purchase them of I could do so with my little stock of cattle. I do not know whether he would make the trade. he told me the forks (two doz) cost $110 dol and were very pure good silver I would like to have your views if adverse to my own it will be all right as my only ---------------------------------------- motive in the matter is to get the Cattle into something that would be useful to our family as it may be difficult to sell for money. I did not intimate this or any other pro[p] -osition to Mr. Gailliard for the forks & would from day to day forget to mention the subject to you while in Houston. I have nothing of interest to write As ever Your loving Mother Mary Jones We had a very nice trip up, we just reached here before the rain set in All are up at this date Sallie & children send love |
