TranscriptAugust 20th./74 My darling Son I have been unable to write you on account of sore eyes and am penning this with Brothers smoked shades over my spectacles just to say that I am will all but my eyes which are very weak & I must not use them for any thing until they are perfectly well. Say to Mrs Ashe I will reply to her let- ter as soon as possible I receive the papers regularly which are a treat to me have had two of letters from you since I wrote July 24th Babys health is now quite good all are well here my own health is very good. Write me whenever you can. Your letters are always acceptable, remember me to Mr Ashe & family also to Mrs Bryan & family As ever your living Mother Mary Jones We had no rain for over five weeks Cotton crops are almost ruined Peaches & Apples are withered on the trees yet we have some that are good yet -------------------------------------------------- I will write more at length so soon as my eyes are stronger I miss my poor eyes more than anything as I cannot see read or write time seems long
