| Transcript | Head Quarters Sat. May 25th 1872 My Dear Son On Monday last I left San Jacinto on board a Tug about 2 Oclock reached Mr Galliards after four Oclock, had to walk from Sams to the wharf near Harlands Stone, and again from the old Chubb ship yard up to the House When I reached there I was completely exhaus -ted had to stay all night was kindly enter -tained & by morning felt much refreshed and went home on horse back Tuesday morning with Gaston who came for me. I was perf- ectly delighted to get home & after resting the first day I went out to the garden and looked over it. I never saw more vegetables on one little piece of ground we will have plenty of fruit Sallie has four cows up makes plenty of butter. She has over three hundred young chickens she says when you come to see us again she can feast you on all these good things. Dear son I improve very slowly just as I feared would be the case I am only able to walk as far as the Garden occa- sionally. I am feeble in every part of my system & very nervous can scarcely ------------------------------------------------------- write as you see. For the past twenty four hours have not felt able to set up any until this evening I feel a little stronger now Upon first being able to sit up I found myself greatly reduced in flesh and no strength at all. I could not set up after you left for ten days, and then not long at a time. I try to feel hopeful and to think I will recover my usual strength again Sallies health continues poor but she has Dave who does almost all the work he milks too. She has the place look- ing like former days except there is no crop growing for want of a good fence Sam & family were all in better health when I left Gaston is still taking off Brick from R[ ]s. I had hoped to have received a letter from you before I left the "burg" Oh Sam is at work getting his five dollars a day I hope his health may not fail I cannot write more As ever your loving Mother Mary Jones I will send this up by Mr Stuarts family on the Sunday Boat -------------------------------------------------- Gaston has consulted Doct. Heard in regard to Sallies bad health& she is using his re medies. I sincerely hope shi may be impr oved by his treatment -------------------------------------------------- [in another hand, on final page] Mrs. Mary Jones May 25th, 1872 Received July 3rd Ansr July 7th |
