CreatorJones, Mary Smith McCrory
DescriptionLetter from Mary Jones, wife of the last president of the Republic of Texas.
TranscriptSan Jacinto March 29th, /72 My Dear Son On Wednesday last your brother Sam came for me in a Sail Boat, was sent by San Ashe, his wife being very sick at- ter the birth of her child (a fine Son) I droped everything and in two hours after Sam reached Head Quarters was on my way here. I found Mrs Ashe quite sick, but some better than she had was when I was sent for This morning (Friday) she is very much better but still in a condition that requires careful nursing to ensure her recovery The Boy is do- ing well, and of course is the greatest Boy of the season Name (John B Ashe) "Sis" and Gaston rea ched home last Sunday after dark she was suffering very much with tooth ache up to the day I left will have it taken out I suppose, hope it is done be- fore this -------------------------------------------------------------------- [letter continues on page 3] To my surprise I found Doct. J. in attendance all very much pleased with his treatment so far and I do earnestly hope he will be entirely successful I shall remain here now until after Jennie is though her trouble which will prolong my stay until near the last of April. So until further advised direct to me here care of your Brother. I regret being from home so long as I had become so much interested in the Garden and helping Sis to with raising chickens, two things I enjoy very much. We have changed things round at home until it begins to look better to say the least of it. Mr Sydmon has received a letter from H M Trueheart in regard to a plan for effecting a final settlement of the Clear Creek land; which letter was to be shown to me by Mr Truehearts request; I will if possible copy it and send copy inclosed in this to you do you think you are sufficiently posted up in the matter to take charge of it entirely if so I will request Mr. T to confer with you hereafter in place of me. I can but think if the matter is liked after we may get our money back if nothing more, and I would ----------------------------------------------------------- be thankful to know we could do that well as it now stands. Tell me in next letter what you know, and understand in regard to the matter & then if there are any points you are lacking in knowledge of I will explain them and send you the papers, deed and all I am very well today though feeling the loss of sleep some As ever your loving Mother Mary Jones You will see by this letter that my ideas are some what upside down Tomorow I will see Mr Sydmon and talk up matters with him in regard to the land may be able to learn what Mr Trueheart will do ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Copied letter, in the hand of Mary Jones, on 2nd page] Galveston March 16 ‘/72 John B Lyanor Lynchburg Dear John (Copy) Mrs Ballinger has notified me that the balance due by Mrs Allen on the Clear Creek lands must be closed up. And I propose selling under the Deed of trust assigned to me by Allen & which covers all of Col An- drews interest & part of yours. Before doing so I wish to get Mrs Allen & Andrews together with a view of effecting a compromise if possible. Andrews owes Mrs A enough to pay balance due on purchase money & balance due me & I think she will make liberal terms with him & in that event I am in favor of buying a League or league & a half and covering up this matter and setting it forever. We can buy a certificate or certificates at 30 to 36 pr Acre. After reading this please forward to Mrs. Anson Jones. It is desirable we should all act together. If Ballinger sells under Deed of trust, we all lose our interests as his Deed of trust covers the whole two leagues Yours truly H M Trueheart
