| Transcript | Head Quarters August [in another's hand] Saturday 13th, /70 My Darling Son As Gaston is going up in his new Boat I seize the opportu= nity of writing you a few lines I have heard that Greenbacks are declining if so you will know it. And in case they are, would it not be well to sell what you have for specie before they go down any further I merely make the suggestion as I know we have nothing to lose in this way. The war in Europe may afford a pretext for the [ ] Gov to repudi= ate, or do something mean, no telling what. So be on the lookout. Sams cotten has commenced opening, but he has not picked any yet, of any consequence and we have not had two much rain yet, althoug it rains all round us almost every day, no cotton worm yet Sam sends up some money $7.50 he wants a half bbl of Flour if you have any good, and if not good send a bushel of good corn meal, we have a bag at Sam Ashe's which you can put it in, he also wants two dollars worth coffe, twelve or fourteen lbs of Lard. If the money does not hold out you will have -------------------------------------------------- to charge the balance; or pay for it out some of mine, I do not like to use any more, than can be helped and for an other reason I would prefer that you charge it to yourself or to him as you may decide best - Sam will soon have him a nice Boat done I have let Mr Jessie Brooks have the little piece of land which I mentioned last week to you by Mr Ashe I send your drawers & fear they too are rather large, if so, send them back and I will alter them, I wish you to let Johns have a hat, not an expensive one, but a good nice look ing hat, Charge to me, on to yourself I will pay for it. Write me by [Gas] all the news. As ever affectionately Your Mother Mary Jones "Din" sends love to you PS suppose you suggest to Sam to sell out that Point interest to you he seems determined to do nothing with it. I think if it was put into the hands of a Lawyer it could be made [to] pay expenses of a suit and something over what think you? I know Sam Ashe thinks as I do - at any rate the matter should [be] settled Jennie & Sam, say wish half bbl flour, on a bush- el of meal, one dol worth Coffee the balance in lard. And I say to send 20 lbs lard BS You will have to furnish a tin bucket to put the lard in, one that will answer for a milking purposes |
