| Description | Philip Guthrie Hoffman served as the fifth president of the University of Houston. He was appointed to this position in September 1961, and was officially inaugurated on April 27, 1962. Hoffman served as president until 1977, when he became president of the University of Houston System. He remained in this position until his retirement in 1979. Some of the advances made at the during Hoffman's tenure include reorganization and augmentation of administrative staff, including shifts within the ranks of the academic deans; conducting an institution-wide self-study; completing a new master plan for campus development; and taking first steps toward the formation of a University of Houston System. He received a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1938 from Pacific Union College and a master's in history in 1942 from the University of Southern California. Following World War II, he obtained his doctoral degree in history from Ohio State University. His dissertation examined the influence of the American Revolution on the founding of Australia. Dr. Hoffman was an instructor of history while doing his graduate work at Ohio State University and for a year after receiving his degree. After leaving Ohio and until 1953, he was on the faculty of the University of Alabama, where he held the ranks of assistant and associate professor of history. From 1953 until 1956, Dr. Hoffman was with the Oregon State System of Higher Education, serving first as vice dean and then as dean of the general extension division. In 1957 he came to the University of Houston as Vice President and Dean of Faculties. |
