| Title | Glenn A. Goerke |
| Description | Glenn Goerke grew up outside Detroit in the 1930s and 1940s. After graduation from Eastern Michigan University, he began working in Detroit-area public schools with children whose IQs kept them out of the classroom. Goerke was among the first to put into practice the state's idea that such students could learn. He stayed in the public schools for more than a decade before receiving his doctorate from Michigan State University in adult and higher education. He helped plan Florida International University, started a Providence campus for the University of Rhode Island, and then headed one of Indiana University's smaller campuses. Goerke's subsequent move to the UH System almost never happened. He had accepted the job as head of UH-Victoria when he was told there was a move in the state Legislature to eliminate the school. He came anyway and the threat was averted. Glenn Goerke had one of the most varied leadership careers at the University of Houston. He began in 1986 as president of UH-Victoria campus. In February 1989 he was appointed interim chancellor for the UH System. When Alexander Schilt arrived to assume the role of chancellor in October 1989 Goerke returned to the UH-Victoria presidency. Then, in June 1991, the Board of Regents approved him for a two-year appointment as president of UH-Clear Lake. During what ended up being a four-year term, Goerke helped secure increased funding from the Legislature and donations from the community, and led a restructuring effort that won praise from the State Comptroller's office. Finally, in June 1995, he was appointed to a two-year term as president of UH. Just prior to Arthur Smith assuming the dual role of UH System chancellor and UH president in 1997, the Board of Regents passed a resolution conferring upon Goerke the title of President Emeritus at the University of Houston, University of Houston-Clear Lake, and University of Houston-Victoria. He also received a honorary doctorate of humane letters at commencement in that same year. |
