TitleAlexander B. Schilt
DescriptionAlexander Schilt earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Wyoming and his master's and doctoral degrees from Arizona State University. He was chancellor of Indiana University East from 1976 to 1980. Schilt first came to Houston in 1980 as president, UH-Downtown. He served in that capacity until 1987, when he went to Eastern Washington University. During the final two years of his presidency at UH-Downtown, he was the System's special assistant to the chancellor for development. In this role he directed the development efforts of the System's four universities and was key public relations officer and principal liaison with a variety of groups. In September 1989 Schilt returned to Houston when the board of regents appointed him chancellor of the UH System. System administrators believed Schilt's first-hand knowledge of the UH System and of Houston, coupled with his leadership experience, made him the logical choice for the chancellorship. While chancellor, Schilt launched the Creative Partnerships Campaign, an effort to build the UH endowment, which surpassed its goal by $8 million. He also delivered a system-wide long-range plan and inaugurated an ongoing planning process. He stepped down as chancellor in 1995, but has remained at the university as a professor in the College of Education. In 1992, while still chancellor, Dr. Schilt became president of the Interamerican University Council for Economic and Social Development (CUIDES). CUIDES is an independent organization comprised of 30 Latin American and 15 United States universities and members are leading educators from the most prestigious public and private institutions of higher learning in 12 countries throughout the Americas. He was elected to his second term as CUIDES president in 1996.
