TitleJames H. Pickering
DescriptionJames Pickering came to Houston in 1981 as dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. He became UH's interim provost in 1991 and acting president after Marguerite Ross Barnett stepped down in January 1992 due to illness. Pickering was then given a two-year appointment as acting president by UH System Chancellor Alex Schilt who believed that time was needed to begin a national search. Prior to coming to UH Pickering emphasized the striking similarity of his and Barnett's vision for UH making it address society's shift toward urban human needs, catering to non-traditional students. Pickering served as an English professor at Northwestern University and an English department chairman and Honors College director at Michigan State University.
